Question:
When I write out my Markers that are each connected to my five passions, how do I get over the fact that some are so wildly impossible that I have a hard time believing they will come true? I don’t want to set myself up for disappointment but if I don’t believe then I am not giving them the right attention.
Answer:
It sounds as though you have an underlying fear that you can’t achieve what you have written. It’s understandable. Many of us have lived within the confines of what we’ve been taught is “reasonable” or “achievable” that it’s scary to start to think about creating our ideal life.
Break your Markers down into small steps. Make each step one that you feel is within your ability to achieve. As each step is realized your confidence level will grow and in turn, what you believe you can create in your life will also grow.
The way to increase your ability to believe in your vision, is to break it down; create steps that you can see are possible; each time you take a step further, then your ability to believe the unbelievable increases.
When Janet knew she was supposed to go to India to connect with the enlightened she had no idea how it was going to happen. She didn’t know where the funds would come from, how she would get connected with the right people, how she was going to capture these meetings when she had never used a video camera before…and the list of concerns went on and on.
We all go through what can be described as “Analysis Paralysis,” where we are so concerned with the how and the sheer number of steps involved, that it stops us in our tracks.
Look at Markers as one more step in gaining increasing clarity. Your job is to get clear on the what and be open to the how. Creating Markers for your passions gives you milestones, or guideposts, so you know when you are on the path of living your passions. Then go ahead and make your plans. Break things down into manageable pieces. Don’t think much more about your impossible dream, focus on achieving the next step along the way.
Your Markers, along with the other tools in the Passion Test are designed to excite you and inspire you because these are the things that are really important in your life. The Markers serve to put your attention on those things that bring you great joy and fulfillment.
Markers are the things which will tell you that your passion is alive and well in your life. When you’re creating your Markers, don’t think much about how they will be achieved, just write them out; they are evidence. The power of intention and attention, along with no tension, is what brings ideas into concrete form. Action engages attention. Break the impossible down into steps and projects that are possible.
Rather than feeling overwhelmed by the enormity of your Markers, acknowledge that these are your passions, your desires and your destiny. It is possible to release the stress and replace it with joy because when you have intention and attention with no tension, then the whole process becomes fun.
