My Life Should Be….

I would like to share a story of what happens when you live in the world of “shoulds”. Recently I heard Susan’s story about feeling down after attending the 70th birthday dinner of a friend of hers. She felt badly in comparison to most of the women at the table because they were either retired or did not work and had what appeared to be very carefree lives in comparison to Susan’s. They had housekeepers, took many trips, and went golfing or shopping whenever they wanted. Susan and her husband divorced after more than 35 years of marriage and as a result of the financial dealings of the divorce she had to work 40 hours a week to pay her bills and eventually retire.

The secrets behind why you play the victim

Your friend calls you and asks how your week was and after you say the customary “It was good”, you go into a litany of issues you had from your kids, your spouse and your clients. They feel badly for you and help you feel better about yourself. The next week the pattern repeats itself, but this time it is over dinner. The following week you find yourself going for a hike with another friend and you download your issues from the prior day or week. This may not describe you but it may represent a friend of yours, perhaps one you have chosen to spend less time with.
